Fall 2016 Entrepreneurship Students' Perspectives
Class environment: “Entrepreneurship is an art form where you can create something with the drive of passion. It is an amazing opportunity that I have received to be able to gain the opportunity to pursue my passion in creating businesses, throwing out ideas and making the magic happen.” - Rachel B. The main things I have enjoyed about this class are the lack of power points, the guest speakers that come in so we can learn about how different people made it in the business world, and the discussion based learning which makes it easier for me to take in information. - Lilian S. “ I honestly don’t think I have any complaints about this class. I look forward to coming to this class everyday, and I feel that makes me produce better content. “ - Conner M. “Another great thing is the guest speakers we have every now and then. These are very interesting and lets us see a different side of the world than just some boring old textbook like every other class has. These speakers really describe the topic and expand on the basic knowledge we know about the subject.” - David K. “I truly feel this class has opened my horizons to opportunities out there and how realistic they actually are. I really appreciate how this class has no barriers and we are able to learn through experiences. However, there is still enough structure within the class where students can still be guided through the entrepreneurial process.” - Alyssa Y. “I was looking forward to a more advanced, challenging class. Little did I know I would be in for more than a class. This course is unlike anything I have ever taken.” - Jessica H. “This class is very easy to “buy into,” and once that happens, the quality of work skyrockets. This class is more like what school should be.” - Ried D. “[I] can honestly say that Entrepreneurship Honors is my favorite class that I am taking. . . . I am grateful to be a student in it.” - Will S. “No other class that I take compares to this one. It has helped me improve myself and hopefully it does even more.” - Destiny S. “Entrepreneurship is one of the most unique classes at AFHS High. . .” - Jennings R. “I really see as a major positive is the willingness for other groups to help each other out. This is truly unique because at the end of the day we are all competing. The feedback from groups before and after presentations has been invaluable.” - Taylor N. Learning From Failure:
“ I have continued to grow and learn throughout the semester and it has been a pleasure. Entrepreneurship to me is all about trial and error and finding something that no one else has done and i believe through this class and the networking I've learned how to better apply myself. I tend to get married to ideas and quite quickly too and through all of this i have learned that the first thing that comes to mind and is put on paper is not always the best option. Changing and advising an idea, product or logo can make it better than I would have thought. - Katie W. Learning From Failure: “. . .because one of my biggest fears is failure. But then I realized that although many businesses fail, the feeling I will get when I succeed, will be worth failing many times to get there. I have also learned that I will face rejection.” - Jessica H. “I have learned more about myself than I have in any other class these first nine weeks. I have gained more confidence in everything I do from all my classes to football. I have learned that I can do well in something if I just put the work in to succeed and never accept defeat. The class has tested my emotions and charisma, pushing me to excel.” - Dylan E. “Giving up after a couple fails won’t do anything for you. It’ll be a waste of time and money but if you keep going it’ll all be worth it in the end.” - Destiny S. “Before this class I was nervous to take small risks like even changing the layout of a paper; but now I am willing to try and fail to become better.” - Caleb M. Careers and Passion
“Another thing is this class has led to me finding some direction in what I want to do regarding careers. I love the idea of being able to create a product and within the process meet new people, and develop skills all to make an individual life better or easier. I never thought in a million years business would be something I would be passionate about, but this class has led me to really consider taking a career in business.” - Alyssa Y. “After taking Marketing, a little flame started in my heart. My whole perspective on the world and my life changed. I would come home everyday and talk about how fascinating marketing was. I would go through the aisles in the grocery store and point out competitors and their marketing strategies. I soon began to realize my passion.” - Jessica H. “. . .my love for business has only gotten bigger. I just love the way you really get down and get to know the students and try and understand them or us.” - Wesley P. “I have learned a lot about myself in this class. I figured out I can do anything I want, I just have to put in the time and work. Before marketing class last year I knew nothing about making, selling, or even advertising products. This class has really opened my eyes to the real business world and helped me see how fun it can really be.” - Jennings R. “Entrepreneurship I Honors class has been completely eye opening for me . . . I know this is going to be one of the few classes that High School will offer that I will use in my life continuously.” - Caleb M |
Developing 21st Century Skills:
“By the time that this project is finished after DECA competitions, it will feel much more satisfying because of how we were able to create this product and learn other business qualities in the process.” - Rachel B. “Having a coach in entrepreneurship is extraordinary because it gives you a feel and a idea from a real entrepreneur who has done the same process we have. Now i’m really good at coming up with questions that really benefits our project by coming up with solutions we didn't think about prior. These are just the first nine weeks and I can’t wait for the next nine! “ - David K. “I feel that this class has helped me get out of my comfort zone and has improved some of the fundamental skills in life.” - Alyssa Y. “Overall, entrepreneurship has been a huge step in the right direction for me. I’ve mastered more skills than I can count.” - Tyler P. “Being more open to ideas and being more flexible is something i have also learned from this past quarter more than ever.” - Katie W. “I have always liked hands on learning better, and the work days best correlate with that. To me, it seems very professional, very real world applicable, and that really appeals to me. Another thing I like about this class is all the different perspectives I get. It is one thing for one teacher to tell you what something is like, but it is a whole another story when professionals are consistently coming in and demonstrating what the teacher talked about. - Ried D. “As much as I have loved the business side of this class, I wholeheartedly believe that the life lessons I have learned are equally important. . . . those who want to get to the next level in business should love and thrive in this class. It really brought home the point that what we are doing with our business plans, really is preparing us for what goes on in the real business world.” - Ryan D. “Along with gaining knowledge about Entrepreneurship, I have also gained knowledge about myself. Since the start of the semester, I have improved on my decision making skills, creativity and imagination, and my effective oral and written communication skills.” - Will S. “I think with this class it has helped me become more prepared for the actual business life, I think it has helped me become more responsible on the things I have to do. . . . [this class] teach[es] us and helps us grow and helps us find who we are.” - Wesley P. “I’m realizing how much I can help out and benefit the group with all that I can do when it’s needed. I can work with my group and lead them in the right way. I’m also starting to be able to think faster and adapt to different situations at a faster pace. I’m sure that all these things I’ve learned will be a benefit later on in life. “ - Destiny S. “In addition to willingness to compete, taking risks, and presenting better, I have learned that I collaborate better now than ever.” - Caleb M. Field Trips:
“The field trips have been a big help to my understanding of entrepreneurship. Going on these field trips to places like HQ Raleigh and going to the Million Cups meeting, I have been able to meet aspiring entrepreneurs and learn about their products and how they have gone with the entrepreneurial process. “ - Conner M. “It opens my eyes to the opportunities right in my backyard.” - Jessica H. “The field trips have given me really cool opportunities to network and I’ve gotten a lot out of them.” - Will S. “[At HQ Raleigh and Launch Chapel Hill] you could tell some people were there looking for teammates, some were meeting, some were teaching, it was just great to see all the different kinds and ages of people that were coming together in one place to receive and give help and criticism to each other.” - Jennings R. |
